The palace Hel brings us to is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It’s massive and beautiful and so incredibly impressive I can’t even begin to imagine who might live here. Or how many people it might hold.

Dozens? Hundreds?

“What do you think the mortgage on this place goes for?” Emmet scans the façade. “I mean. I think it’s out of my budget on a cop’s salary, but maybe I could pick up some pay duty.”

I laugh. “Dream on, dude. You’d have to be a president of a country to be able to afford a place like this.”

Sloan grins. “There are a great many stunning palaces in Austria. What always impresses me is that as awed as we are, imagine how much more unfathomable a building like this would’ve seemed to the common folks of the 1500s.”

“That’s cray-cray.” I stare at the place lit up against the darkness of night. “I have to admit, hotness, your love of big old buildings is growing on me.”

Sloan grins. “Then my evil plan is working.”

Merlin scratches his head and scrubs a hand through the stubble on his chin. “How paranoid is he about being found? Will he have spells cast and wardings up?”

Hel shakes her head. “Not usually. Loki is cocky but also enjoys the surprise of a twist of fate. If someone were to find him here, it would only make the trouble he’s causing more fun. He’ll have guards, though.”

Guards we can deal with. “So, where do you think Loki is and what makes you think he’s here?”

“Oh, he’s here.” Hel frowns at the grand residence. “But with over fourteen hundred rooms, the trick will be to find him.”

“What about my pendant?” I pull my silver likeness of him out from under my shirt. “Can we use it for scrying Dionysus? It has his energy and is supposed to connect with him to notify him when I need him.”

Hel cuts me with a scathing glare, and I take a step back. Okay, I gotta remember to bite my tongue about Dionysus and me being close.

This girl had it bad at one time—and still does—and is scary as hell—or Hel, I suppose.

Holy schmoly, is that where the saying comes from?

Scary as Hel?

Hilarious.

“Fi? Yo, earth to sista.” Emmet waves in front of my face and blinks. “Where’d you go there?”

“Sorry. Brain tidal wave. I got pulled out by the undertow. What did I miss?”

“Merlin asked you to take the pendant off so he can empower it as a pendulum.”

“Oh, of course. Sorry.” I pull the pendant over my head and free it from underneath the length of my hair. “Do your thing—and thanks for coming.”

Merlin nods. “Dionysus is a friend, and after getting to know him at your birthday party, a dear one at that. I want to help bring him home. Now, let’s see where this pendant takes us.”
